Children enter the juniors (Key Stage 2) at age 7 into Year 3 and are immersed into a broad and balanced curriculum which aims to foster independence, creativity and self-confidence. Strong pastoral care, excellent pupil child relationships and strong academic values are at the heart of Avalon school. Children’s personal development is excellent, fulfilling our school’s aim to help pupils become the proud, confident and articulate young citizens of tomorrow.
The Independent School Inspectorate found that
“The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent. The school successfully meets its aim and core value of excellence, to provide the best opportunity for every child to learn, grow and develop in a stimulating and supportive learning environment”(ISI 2015)
Small classes and strong teaching assistant support in core lessons ensure that teachers are able to work collaboratively with children to help them achieve their potential in all areas of the curriculum. Children develop respect for their own culture through their musical, dramatic and creative experiences within school.
Housed in our Junior building, children are able to make use of a dedicated science lab, art studio and computer suite. PE, Music, Art, computing, French and Spanish are taught exclusively by our specialist teachers throughout the Juniors.
Additionally, specialist teaching takes place in Literacy and Numeracy which accommodates the requirements of the Grammar school assessments in the Autumn of Year 6.
Visits to places of interest are undertaken throughout the school year, to enhance our curriculum and residential trips are offered to all pupils in Years 4 and 6. There is also a bi annual ski trip to France open to all children in Years 4 – 6.
As well as opportunities for individual music tuition and participation in the school’s choirs and Junior orchestra, the Juniors also enjoy putting on an annual show.
