Year 1 News 2022-2023

Gillmoss Recycling Trip

Year 1 and 2 took a trip to Gillmoss recycling centre. While there the children enjoyed learning about the different materials and how they are recycled. They also enjoyed a lovely tour around the centre and learned what each machine did in the process of recycling. The children had a lovely day and enjoyed all the activities!

Puzzle Day

Today, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 took part in puzzle day. There were 5 activities that they took part in which included key press, cup stack, pentominoes, laser maze and orienteering. Throughout the day each group started working better as a team and used this team work to complete each activity.

Masterclass in Watercolour

Today Year One enjoyed a masterclass in watercolour with artist Mark Swan. They focused on painting butterflies and bees and took great care in the detail that went into them as well as mixing the colours to create bright and colourful pictures!

Fossil Hunting on the Beach!

Year 1 enjoyed their first Beach School session this morning. The sun was shining and we learned about the tide and how to stay safe on the beach. Following our work about Mary Anning, the famous fossil hunter, the children used magnifying glasses to spot patterns on the rocks. We are all looking forward to our beach session.

Exciting activities for Easter At St Bridget's

This week the Infants visited St. Bridget’s Church where they learned about the story of Easter. The children enjoyed decorating palm leaves and left special messages on pebbles in the garden display.

Pancakes, squash and sunshine... what more can you ask for?

Year 1 were excited this morning for their ‘Good Behaviour Breakfast’ at Hickory’s. We had a sunny spring walk down to the restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed our pancakes and squash.

Year 1 Meet the Characters from Narnia! 

Year 1 enjoyed World Book Day today and were delighted to enjoy a drama production of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’.

This afternoon, the children had the opportunity to meet some of the characters from the story and chatted to Mr. Tumnus, Mrs. Beaver and the White Witch.

Having Fun in Science with Skittles!

Year 1 had a great science lesson this morning making observations.

The children spoke about how making an observation means to look at and describe what happens in an experiment.

They created their own patterns using skittles and poured water on them to create colour runs.

The children then recorded their observations by drawing diagrams and writing down the names of the colours that they saw in their colour run.

Sending and Receiving Skills in P.E 

Year 1 have been developing their hand eye coordination skills in PE lessons. After a warm-up session and discussion on why we warm up, they played a variety of small team games. The children worked cooperatively and with enthusiasm to enhance their sending and receiving skills whilst enjoying physical activity.

Chinese New Year - Year of the Rabbit

Kung hey fat choy!

Year 1 have been learning about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. We have talked about the phases of the moon, and we know that this year is the year of the rabbit. We have found China on the globe, on a map of the world and in the atlas. All the children made a Chinese flag and a paper craft rabbit. We have listened and written about the River Race story and discussed the order of the Chinese zodiac. We have painted colourful dragons and made Chinese lanterns.

Exploring the World

Happy New Year! This week Year 1 have begun a new topic all about ‘Travel and Transport’. We have been looking closely at the globe and finding the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. We have located the UK and named all the different continents. As it will soon be Chinese New Year, we have found China on a map of the world and made its flag.

Preparing for Christmas

Year 1 have been very busy preparing for Christmas. We have made Christmas cards, performed our Christmas play and enjoyed our Christmas Lunch.

Year 1 & Year 2 Conker Competition 

The Year 1 & Year 2 children thoroughly enjoyed their counting conkers competition on Monday the 14th of November! After collecting the conkers over the past few weeks, it was now time for both classes to go head-to-head to see which class had collected the most by counting in units of ten. Congratulations to Year 2 for collecting the most and to Year 1 for all their efforts – there was lots of enthusiasm from both sides.

Having Fun at Chester Zoo

Year 1 and 2 had a wonderful trip to Chester Zoo this week. We began with a classroom session and enjoyed learning about sorting animals into groups. We saw lots of animals around the zoo including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and insects. The children enjoyed their picnic lunch and we were very lucky that the rain stayed away.

Festival of Diwali

Year 1 have been learning all about the festival of Diwali this week. We have looked at the story of Rama and Sita, coloured some beautiful Rangoli patterns and made some Diwa lamps from clay. Year1 have really enjoyed learning about Diwali ana how it is celebrated around the world.

Searching for Signs of Autumn

Year 1 have enjoyed a walk on Caldy Hill this week. We looked for signs of autumn in our environment and found many different coloured leaves, fungi, acorns and berries! We all really enjoyed being outside in the fresh air and exploring the woods.

Thinking About Harvest

Year 1 have been continuing with our topic of food and healthy eating. For our art session this week we have used strips of bright card to weave in and out of a harvest basket. This activity helps with our fine motor skills as well as looking very pretty!

Keeping Fit

Year 1 have been combining PE with PSCHEE this week. They have been keeping fit whilst developing their coordination and control in sending and receiving a ball using a scoop. The children worked enthusiastically working cooperatively with a partner.

Learning about Healthy Eating

Year 1 have been learning about food, healthy eating and exercise this week in PSCHEE. Linking this into our Art lesson, we used fruit and vegetables to print and make some lovely pictures. Everyone enjoyed this activity even if it was a little messy!

Programming Bee Bots

Year 1 have been learning about technology that can be found around school. This week, they have revisited Bee Bots!  Children were able to program their Bee Bot using directional language of forwards, backwards, left and right to instruct their robot to reach a certain point on the mat. Year 1 worked well as small teams, practising turn taking and helping each other give the correct instructions to reach the target.

Fantastic First Week Year 1

Year 1 have settled into the new school year wonderfully and are adapting to the changes and exciting new things to discover in their new classroom. In Art this week they painted self-portraits, looking closely at their features in the mirror and using pencil to draw and then paint to add colour.
