Year 5 News

Year 5 & Year 6 PE

Year 5 and 6 recently took part in the Inter-house Beanbag Bowling Competition, an event which was greatly enjoyed by all the children. The children competed fairly, skilfully and with enthusiasm. There were fabulous individual and team performances. All teams were competitive but St. David's were the clear winners and St. Andrew's won second place in a very exciting play-off.

 

Year 5 & Year 6 Mindfulness Club

In Mindfulness club this week, the children explored all their four senses. The children took it in turns to 'sculpt' an object out of scented Play Doh and their partner had to ring a bell when they had guessed what the mystery object was! 

Art

Whilst the skiers were enjoying Italy, Art at Avalon was equally fun as we created our very own pet hedgehogs.

Computing

This week in computing, Year 5 have been busy wiring up their Crumble control boards. They had to find out how to code their Crumbles so that the sparkles changed colour.  Some children have now added another sparkle to their circuit and are keen to add more components next lesson.  See more photos in our class gallery.

PE Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 had a challenging and exciting P.E. lesson on Friday. In teams, their task was to cross from one end of the hall to the other with a few items of equipment: two mats (only one of which could be moved); two stepping stones and two short balance beams. Was it possible? After discussion and with trial and error, ingenuity, support for each other and great agility, all teams managed - some faster than others. They enjoyed, and rose to, the challenge.

PHSCEE - The 4 Pillars of Health

Year 5 made healthy lifestyle posters in their PHSCEE lessons based on the 4 pillars of health from Dr Rangan Chatterjee. Following a informative talk from one of our parents who is a family GP, we looked at what wee needed to to to ensure we had a balanced and healthy lifestyle. We split it into 4 sections: Eating well, Moving more, Relaxing and Sleeping better. Lots of us felt that we were doing well in many areas but could improve in some areas, particularly sleep!

Science - Life Cycle of a Seed

We have been working on the topic of life cycles and the children have started an investigation on the life cycle of a seed. Before starting the activity, year 5 discussed what they knew about plant growth and made predictions on what they thought would happen. After that, the children observed, using magnifying glasses, what the seed looked like at the start of the life cycle and drew their observations. They then used paper towels or kitchen towels, made sure they were moist and sprinkled the seeds on top. The paper was then folded and slid into a bag which they attached to the window for the seeds to get some sunlight. Year 5 will be continuing to observe these over the next few weeks and recording their findings through diagrams. 

Thumbs Up!

Today, Year 5 had their first session with the wonderful @thumbsupprog ​​. The programme has been formulated to support primary school children in a variety of ways. They tackle such issues as self-confidence, self-esteem, positive thinking, resilience and much much more. Sue and Kath are regular visitors to our school and we are very proud to be working alongside them.

Mindfulness

In Mindfulness Club, Year 5 and 6 have been decorating stones; painting poppies, flowers and owls on them. When they are varnished we will put them in our garden.

English - The poetry of Allan Ahlberg

In English this term we have been learning about the comic poetry of Allan Ahlberg.

We had a lot of fun on the field acting the poem "Dog In The Playground. After studying the poem Mrs K asked us to write our own version.

Wolf in the playground,
It’s going to eat us all
Mrs McCabe there is a wolf
It’s popped the ball

It’s chasing Caleb
Mrs Calloway has come down
We need a grizzly bear
oh no it’s giving Mrs Calloway a frown

It’s charging Mrs Calloway
Quick shut the door
The wolf didn’t manage to get in
There’s never been a wolf in the school before

Oh no shut the main door
Is eating the school dinners
There comes a grizzly bear
The fighting I think the wolf is the winner

Tristan is being brave
 he’s fighting with it
the children escape Through the mouth
The grizzly bear sent it flying with her enormous hit

Bat in the cloakroom
Someone get it down
Mrs McGregor glaring in,
With a very big frown

Oh no Ethan fainted
And Caleb screaming
Sapphires looking through,
The door just gleaming

It’s home time now
The children running
But the bats still there
Looking very cunning

The very next day
The children run in
And find that the bats
In a very big bin

Now that it’s night
The bats quietly gone
Jack looks out the window
And calls it Harrison

Hippo in the office,
Oh no what a to do!
There goes a nice pack

Mrs Rigby under the desk

Oh there is the hippo
This is going to be one big fight

The hippos got the printer,
It is down in one crunch.
Then we heard Mrs Rigby cry,
hey that was my lunch.

Mrs Callaway running in shouting,
What’s going on in here.
Mrs Calloway spots the hippo,
Then running away in fear

Bill on the chase trying to catch
That evil thing
The hippo grabs his belt buckle
And it’s off with a ping.

Kirsty on the table
Trying to climb up the wall
Oh look the hippo is
Walking through the hall

Hippo in the office
Oh no what do you think
Mrs Rigby from the loo cried
Look he’s in the sink

Incomes Sapphy crying
Oh no I had a bump
Income is the hippo
And she’s down in a thump

Gone.

Mindfulness

The Year 5 and 6 children who attend Mindfulness Club recently had a very creative time making 'Mandalas,' using paper plates, shells, pebbles, beads, wool and coloured lollipop sticks! The word 'Mandala' means 'circle.' Mandalas are spiritual and ritual symbols in Hinduism representing the universe.

English

Year 5 have enjoyed studying the poems of Allan Ahlberg during the last two weeks. Starting off with Things I Have Been Doing Lately and ending with Dog In The Playground, they have analysed poems, shared their opinions about them, and written their own poems using similar styles. In addition, they have practised reading Ahlberg's poems and their own out loud, ensuring that they captured and maintained the interest of their audience.  Re-enacting Dog In The Playground on the field really brought the poem alive for the children.
